Your First BJJ Competition: The Complete Checklist
A first tournament feels much easier when the practical details are organised. Rules differ between organisers, so read the official event information and ask your coach about anything unclear. Use this checklist as a starting point, not as a replacement for the current rules.
Before registration
Confirm the ruleset, belt division, age group, weight class and whether weigh-in happens with or without uniform. Register with the correct academy and check the deadline for corrections. Do not plan an aggressive last-minute weight cut for your first event.
Check your uniform
Make sure your Gi or No-Gi kit meets colour, patch, length and fabric requirements. Pack a clean backup uniform if permitted. Trim nails, remove jewellery and bring suitable footwear for areas outside the mat.
Pack the day before
Bring identification, registration confirmation, water, easy-to-digest food, warm clothing, tape and any personal protective equipment allowed by the rules. Keep wet or used items separate. A structured gearbag prevents small essentials from disappearing at the bottom.
On competition day
Arrive early enough for check-in and weigh-in. Learn where your mat is, listen for division announcements and warm up gradually. Your coach should know your approximate start time. After each match, confirm whether and when you compete again.
Keep the goal realistic
Your first tournament is information. Focus on starting safely, recognising positions and following your plan. A medal is welcome, but one calm decision under pressure can be a more useful result for future training.
Quick competition checklist
Registration checked, rules read, weight class confirmed, uniform approved, bag packed and arrival planned. Once those tasks are complete, your job is simple: warm up, listen to your coach and experience the match.
