A good BJJ Gi should let you move freely, survive regular gripping and meet the rules of your academy or competition. Brand names matter less than fit, fabric, construction and care.

Start with the fit

Use the manufacturer's size chart and compare both height and weight. The jacket should close comfortably without excessive fabric around the torso. Sleeves and trousers must allow full movement and should not become too short after washing. Body proportions vary, so a size between two charts may require a long, fitted or mixed-size option.

Understand GSM and jacket weaves

GSM means grams per square metre and describes fabric density, not the total weight of the uniform. A lighter Gi can feel cooler and pack easily; a heavier Gi may feel more substantial. Pearl weave is now the most common jacket fabric because it balances strength, comfort and weight. Single and double weaves exist, but the name alone does not guarantee quality.

What about Gi trousers?

Gi trousers are commonly made from cotton twill/drill or ripstop. Cotton feels soft and familiar; ripstop uses a reinforced grid and often dries faster. Check the knee reinforcement, drawstring, belt loops and seam quality. The best choice is the one that stays comfortable during movement and repeated washing.

Competition and colour rules

Ask your academy before choosing a colour. White, royal blue and black are common, while some tournaments restrict colours, patches, fabric weight or sleeve dimensions. Competition regulations change, so always check the current rules of the organiser before an event.

Shrinkage and care

Cotton can shrink, especially with heat. Unless the product instructions say otherwise, wash cool, close hook-and-loop fasteners on other garments and air-dry the Gi. Avoid leaving a damp uniform in your bag. Washing soon after training protects the fabric and your training partners.

A simple buying checklist

  • Correct size for both height and weight
  • Enough room for shoulders, hips and squats
  • A fabric weight that suits climate and travel
  • Reinforced seams and knees
  • Colour and dimensions allowed by your academy or event
  • Care instructions you can follow consistently
